DP Team Takes 2nd Place

Published inĀ JOURNAL ONLINE April 6, 2011

DP United, the Des Plaines Park District's girls traveling U13 soccer team, captured second place in the 2011 Schaumburg Indoor Soccer League.
The team finished the 10 game season with a record of 6-3-1 against such top rated teams as Orange Park Ridge, Ajax FC U13, Celtic FC, Synergy U-13 and Schaumburg U13, all affiliated with the Illinois Women's Soccer League.
DP United scored a season total of 45 goals, the most of any of the eight competing teams.
The season got off to a shaky start as the team played the first three games with only nine players.
"This is the first year these girls, ages 11-13, have played together as a team. U13 plays eight on a field, which meant that the players did not have a chance to take a breather," said Joshua Cantres, athletic supervisor.
"Thanks to the commitment and determination of our two volunteer coaches, and the addition of four players, the team rallied back to an impressive finish," Cantres said.
DP United was led by United States Soccer Federation certified coach, Avdo Hanic, a former college soccer player in Croatia and Manuel Medina, an IYSA certified coach and former professional soccer player in the European league and in the MLS. Both have coached in the Des Plaines Park Dist. soccer league for over seven years.
Tryouts for the fall traveling soccer team will be held on May 31, June 1 and June 2.
